We are investigating the reasons why people choose not to vaccinate their children for our cause and effect essays. In class, we're reading articles and information that explain, mostly, why people in countries other than the United States are not vaccinating their children. However, the "anti-vaxx" movement in the USA is gaining momentum, and has recently come into the media spot light because of an outbreak of measles - a disease that was almost completely eradicated through the use of vaccines.
Watch and listen to the video and find two CAUSES for the anti-vaxx movement in the US and Great Britain. Prepare a short paragraph explaining whether you AGREE or DISAGREE with these reasons for not vaccinating a child.

One of the causes for the anti-vaxx movement was the publication made in 1998 by the Doctor Andrew Wakefield saying that autism disorders are linked to the measles vaccine. The other one is that when doctors said the vaccine is secure they talked too technically and people thought they were saying something different.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the first reason that I said because it was proved that Wakefield manipulated the evidence for the publication, he was even pulled out of the Medical Register, so you cannot continue with a movement that was initiated under that circunstances. I agree with the second reason because I know that Doctors want the people to know that even when they are 90% sure of something, they are not 100% sure, so they talk medical language explaining how effective is the medicine and they speak english to say they are not 100% sure of it ,so that is the only thing people understand.
1-There is a scientific rumors that measles vaccine cause autism.
ReplyDelete2-One of the components of vaccine production utilized is Mercury.
I disagree that measles vaccine causes autism because that ideas are made by civil and they doesn´t have enough information to support that idea. Also vaccination is very important to prevent diseases, even when a specific disease is eradicated and scientists and the population doesn´t want an epidemic situation. Finally, about the component of the vaccine could be true but should be noted that before to prove a vaccine in a population is proved in animals and scientists are making the best for our save.
Causes
ReplyDelete1- In 1998, Dr Andrew Wakefield wrote that there was a connection between measles vaccine and autism.
2- Because a vaccine called thimerosal contains mercury, which people thought that it would kill whoever gets vaccinated with it.
I DISAGREE with the "anti-vaxx" movement with these irrelevant causes. First, because the so called doctor published his opinion, about the vaccine causing autism, based about an only TWELVE studies. I think, is not correct to jump to the conclusion of eradicating a vaccine with so little information. And vaccines are made by many experiments before applying it to people. Also, I believe that people have to know better before they speak because, about the cause of the mercury in a vaccine, people complained with not knowing that the mercury of the vaccine wasn’t the same as the toxic one and should know that vaccines are made for the benefit of our health.
1- In 1998 in The Lancet ( a medical journal) appeared a paper written by Dr. Wakefield that claimed that there might be a connection between MMR vaccine and Autism.
ReplyDelete2-Another thing was that there was this vaccine preservative named Thimerosal which contains mercury.
I disagree with no vaccinating a child, vaccines were created to prevent that kids can get sick or even die. In the medical field assure something without a previous experiment can be fatal. People should investigate and educate themselves more about a topic before following the ideals of another person. I'm in favor of vaccination and so far there is nothing that can make me change my mind.
1) In 1998, Dr. Wakefield published a paper that connect the measles vaccine with the autism
ReplyDelete2) A vaccine with Thimerosal contains mercury.
As a medical student and as a conscious human I totally disagree with this. Dr. Wakefield study was rejected because of his lack of veracity. Vaccines are the number one solution to prevent most of the deadliest diseases, this is helping our children to have a shield against diseases. So, if we have the power to fight against these dead causes, why we are going to follow a wrong ideology? That just make no sense to me..
Causes
ReplyDelete-It may be a connection between measles vaccine and autism
-Vaccines with dangerous levels of poisonous mercury
I totally disagree with this arguments, first because it was a twelve persons case study take it as a whole. Scientifically no conclusions can be drawn if the sample of a study is not proportional to the population in general. Also, they have to present people with different backgrounds and characteristics. When such groups do attempt to be scientific, they primarily cite links between mercury exposure and other neurological problems outside the setting of vaccine administration. According to studies found that adults exposed to much lower concentrations of mercury than those given to american children still suffered brain damage years later. It is too easy to find misinformation on vaccines today, but science has advanced helping many people to avoid contagious diseases that could lead to death.
Causes
ReplyDelete• One of the causes stand from a 1998 paper that appear in a very respectable medical journal in the UK written by Doctor Andrew Winfield in which he claim that they might be a connection between measles vaccine (MMR vaccine) and autism.
• And another cause of the movement was because a vaccine calls THIMEROSAL, which contains ethyl mercury.
No, I’m not agree with the reason above because I think that now that I study medicine and know a little about the immunity system I can tell if those reasons are good enough for stop vaccinating kids and no they are not. First of all yes there are certain risk that kids takes when they’re vaccinated but it’s proven that none of them involve contracting autisms. I think all kids should be vaccinating in order to stop or eradicated certain disease.
n 1998 the Dr. Wakefield wrote a report saying that mumps, rubella and measles and autism were linked.
ReplyDeleteI disagree because a vaccine is not the cause of autism, this research had bad results. Autism covers a range of disorders that affect communication skills , socialization and empathy of the person. Autistic have a personality inward- pathologically .
Vaccines are injected antibodies children to make your immune system more resistant to viruses
I think that this is an issue of ignorance and a bit of a taboo subject, because the parents take this decision due to a bad information in addition the movement anti-vaxx and other information related to the pharmaceutical companies promote that the parents do not want to vaccinate their children.
ReplyDelete1- In 1998 in The Lancet ( a medical journal) appeared a paper written by Dr. Wakefield that claimed that there might be a connection between MMR vaccine and Autism.
ReplyDelete2-Another thing was that there was this vaccine preservative named Thimerosal which contains mercury.
I disagree because there is no evidence that undoubtfully connect autism to vaccines. The research done only establishes a possible connection. That being said, there are also more cases where the vaccine does work and doesnt cause autism than when it does the contrary.
1- In 1998, Dr Andrew Wakefield wrote that there was a connection between measles vaccine and autism.
ReplyDelete2- Because a vaccine called thimerosal contains mercury.
I disagree because although it is logical to think that someone would suffer consequences after being injected with something containing mercury, there is no evidence of a case like this ocurring. And even if there was, it would be an exception of the norm. The same thing happens with the case of relating vaccines to autism. In order to conclude that these stipulations are true, there should be no doubt when testing these cases.
Causes:
-Dr. Wakefield in 1988 published an article showing a connection between MMR vaccine an autism.
-The Thimerosal vaccine contains mercury and some people consider that it could kill anyone that received a shot of it.
I completely disagree with the Anti-Vaxx movement because there are not enough reasons that show a relation between vaccines and illness. Some of the known aren't certain, and it is just a way to follow close-mind thoughts. When you decide not to vaccine your child you're helping to increase the risk of diseases and some could be lethal to people with depressed inmune system.
-In 1998, Dr. Wakefield said that there might be a connection between the use of the MMR Vaccine and develop autism.
ReplyDelete-Scientist said that a preservative contained in vaccines called Thimerasol was a mercury source, so it was unsaved for people.
I disagree in not using the vaccines because there's not a constant or certain study that proves vaccines are not save for us or relate its use with a health problem. Instated of this, from thousands of years through now, vaccines have prevented many mortal diseases with no bad massive effect registered, so it's not fair to expose children to lethal diseases just because a group of people think that there's a problem but it's not proved.
