St. Patrick's Day

Just like the Dominican Republic has a patron saint (and many of it's towns have their own patrons as well), many traditionally Roman Catholic countries have a special saint.

Ireland, an island country in Europe, has Saint Patrick as its patron saint. There are many legends (and rumors!) about Saint Patrick and his day, March 17.

In Ireland, Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated as a public bank holiday - which means there is no work or school! Since the 1990s, it has been a day used to showcase the Irish culture in Ireland and also in the Irish diaspora throughout the world.

Read more information about Saint Patrick here.

Assignment:
Watch the video about Saint Patrick and read the information in the above link. Decide whether you think that Saint Patrick is a solid choice for the patron saint of Ireland or not.
Prepare and write a PERSUASIVE paragraph (4-6 sentences) to convince your audience whether Saint Patrick is a good patron or not. You must use at least one FACT from the information found in the video and/or webpage and site your source (like we learned in class).

Publish your paragraph in the comments section below.

  1. Saint Patrick had a rough childhood. He was captured by pagans who took him to Ireland as a slave. During his time as a slave he acknowledged his vocation of Christianity, and after he escaped he returned to his homeland to study in the monastery. Despite the bad treatment he had, he followed the path of right and without remorse built schools and churches for the good of all. I regard him as a saint, because if you realize his bad experiences made him the best he could be, and found a motive to change people leading them to the right direction.

  2. After I heard the story of San Patrick I am totally convinced he is a perfect Patron. Even if you are an atheist you have to admitt that what he did is honored of remember. The fact that he was a pagan before he was a slave made my point, he turn into christianity while he was suffering because his life as a slave and when he came back to Irland he did not stayed at home looking at the sky, he started to transform pagans to christians, started to create churchs and schools in order to help. People said he made miracles but he did not have to do because as humans all we have to see is his commitment with the people. He is a perfect Patron because if you are an atheist you will remember the story of man that was just like you and ended up helping people through his christianity, if you are not an atheist you can use the story of San Patrick to inspire yourself helping others and as a prove that if you have a goal you only need to work for get to it. Maybe he is not remember as he should but like the narrator told in the video ''he was a man that spent 30 years of his life helping Irish and hopefully now we know more about his life'' which was an incredible journey.

  3. Yes, I think that St. Patrick, is a solid establishment in Ireland as it is held in this country since 1990 and has emerged a greater belief for 2000 onwards it becomes various holidays.

    2. San Patricio, is a saint of great importance both in Ireland and in other countries like Mexico, Argentina, Sydney, Madrid, Montserrat, London, New York, Chicago.

    3. This international festival is the height of the great celebrations in the world and promote excitement throughout Ireland by way of an innovation, creativity, back to the roots and marketing activity.

    4. Promove the opportunity and motivation for people with Irish ancestry (and those who want to be Irish) attend and this imaginative and expressive celebration.

    5. According to the story of the video, this saint has provided assistance in different situations to different people, helped someone out of jail, unless a person from a fire in a home, the protection that gave Che Guevara his career as a student and revolutionary.

  4. He was abducted to the West of England by Irish pirates. Slave Labor as pastor until he managed to escape.
He decided to return to Ireland when one night he heard a voice calling him to come back. It did, and began an uphill battle to convert to Christianity to the Irish. A battle that became a triumph over the years.

  5. In the first place, Irish people most feel very proud that someone like Saint Patrick fought against Paganism in their country. A man that not even born in Ireland was the one who decided to fought for Christianity in that country. Saint Patrick (who wasn’t Saint by that time) was captured by pagans who took him to Ireland as a slave. While he was a slave he accepted his vocation of Christianity, after that he returned to his land to study in a monastery. He started to create churches and schools, with this he was helping to appease Paganism. Nowadays people celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day without not even knowing what the color green and the clover represents in this celebration, with must investigate about our holidays and culture.

  6. St. Patrick was captured by a group of Irish pirates. The raiders brought Patrick to Ireland where he was a slave and held captive. At first in the time he spent in captivity was critical to his spiritual development, but then, Saint Patrick worked as a shepherd and strengthened his relationship with God through prayer eventually leading him to convert to Christianity. After that he returned to his homeland and started to create schools and churches for everyone. So if We see the hard life he had and the Man he became, he deserves to be remembered as a big a Man and as a Saint.

  7. After read Saint Patrick history as the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, I am convinced that he deserves to be honored. Is admirable how he dedicated his life to be thankful to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God.There are many reasons why it is worthy of being known as a patron saint, foe example, in Irish, like others religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped and was St. Patrick who among other things ended this pagan rite. its title is definitely matched him, is worthy of being honored not only by Christians, but for all globaliza population for their extraordinary ability to convert pagans to Christianity and to create churchs and schools just to help others.
